The Mere which is also called the Patu were made from wood, bone and stone. These were used in close combat as an effective clubbing, stabbing and cutting weapon. However when made from Nephrite Jade (Pounamu) they became the ultimate symbol of mana and chieftainship. Taking on the physical personification of the tribe (iwi) a chiefs mere was passed from chief to chief gathering mana and power down through the ages. Mere Pounamu were also given to great warriors who have proved themselves as leaders on the battle field.

As an art form the shape is graceful and shows off the great beauty of jade. Having a fine edge allows for light to penetrate and the large surface allows for touch and feel of the tactile qualities of jade.

Although Serpentine is not true Jade it is from the same family which makes it perfect for sculptuer
