New Zealand jade - Hine Pounamu

Hine Pounamu is the goddess of Jade.  The story of pounamu is a long one and there are several versions.  In one she is taken up the Arahura River by an ancient taniwha and turned into stone.  She was also called waitieke and this is the name of the creek which is the source of jade in the Arahura River.
